Great Big Green Week 2023

INTRODUCTION

The UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature is back and once again Greening Wymondham are joining in the fun.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

We’ve teamed up with lots of Wymondham organisations and groups and have a full week of activities planned for all ages and at various places around the town, starting on Saturday 10th June. You can find details of all the events on the GBGW website here.

Wymondham Library will be having a display of books all about trees, which is the theme of our Great Big Green Week this year. Why not pop over and have a browse?

Tour of Wymondham Abbey Meadows

A rare opportunity to walk around the Abbey Meadows should be seen as a golden opportunity, which were last opened in 2009.

Join Historic Buildings researcher Stephen Heywood FSA at 2:30pm for a rare, yet fascinating talk and tour.

Browick Community Orchard - Volunteer Session

Every fortnight we assemble at Browick Recreation Ground to tend to our community orchard which was started at the end of 2021. Please come and join us on Saturday 10th between 10am - 12noon. All ages welcome.

No previous experience of any kind is required, just your enthusiasm. All tools will be supplied and we even stop for a cup of tea or coffee at 11am!

Roots Community Café - Planet Friendly Menu and Family Activities

As part of their weekly (Monday & Friday) community café offering, Wymondham Baptist Church will also be serving additional plant-based (planet friendly) food and hosting colouring activities for young families.

So, if you fancy a tasty bite to eat and some entertainment for your young ones, please do call in between 10am - 1p

Wild Tribe - Toys, Books & Items Swap

Does your baby or child have some toys, books or other items that they no longer need, but you’d like to replace them? Come along to the Kings Head Meadow between 9:30am - 11:30am and have some fun swapping them with replacements. You never know what exciting things you may take home!

Textiles Mending Workshop

Do you have some well-loved clothes that you want to keep on wearing, but they look past their prime? Or have some spare fabric to hand that you don’t know what to do with it? Don’t bin them, use them.

Come to this mending workshop between 10:30am - 12noon at the Needlecraft Haberdashery on Town Green for help in bringing your old clothes back to life. It will make you look good and help the planet at the same time.

Norfolk Rivers Trust - Litter Pick & Balsam Bashing Demonstration

The good people of Norfolk Rivers Trust will down on the River Tiffey at Becketswell Meadow between 10am - 3pm demonstrating how to manage the Himalayan Balsam and to clear up any litter they come across too.

If you would like to find out how you too can help eradicate this invasive species, do come along and chat to them

Great Big Pub Quiz - White Hart

The regular Thursday night pub quiz - which starts at 8:30pm - will be enhanced with some eco-questions.

Think you know something about trees, biodiversity and climate? Then come along with a team and see how well you get on with a team and see how well you get on with our questions.

Myhills Pet & Garden - Seed Planting Activity

Family centred activity at Wymondham’s local garden supplies retailer. Come along between 2 - 4pm and get your hands dirty planting various flower seeds in pots for you to take home and grow.

Great Big Green Week Finale - Family Friendly Eco-activities

To round out our week, we will be hosting a number of activities and stalls between 10am - 4pm in the Wymondham Abbey Hall.

Activities will include:

treasure trail around the town (with prize)
junk modelling competition (with prize).

There will be a variety of stalls including: Wymondham Nature Group (WyNG); hedgehog information; herbs for sale; a series of short films on the subject of looking after the planet we call home (see here for details); information on phone apps to help you become a citizen scientist; and more.
